With the hectic Christmas season finally behind us, the team here at WCH have finally had a bit of spare time on our hands to get stuck back into our woodland work – which is exactly what we did last week.

Returning to an ancient forest plantation we visited the same time last year, we were back to plant another round of saplings. Joined once again by Angus from Cumbria woodlands.

We started the day off with a reminder from Angus about the process of getting our saplings in the ground and protected.

This woodland has lost a large amount of trees and has become fairly sparse in areas. Our mission was to carry on with our work from last season and fill in these areas with a mix of native trees to help the woodland bounce back.

Bringing back these native trees to the area helps provide more nesting habitat for our woodland animals and insects, as well as boosting food and pollen production for them. We’re also preventing soil erosion and creating a natural wind barrier for the area and the sheep that graze nearby.

Another job well done, we’ll no doubt be back soon to help out again.

Thanks for looking, till next time!
